New Year’s Resolution: Capturing Life + Joy

What are your New Year’s resolutions for 2016? Kaela, January’s Artist of the Month, has an optimistic message to share: capture moments of happiness. Her fun, colorful, and playful collection reflects her enthusiastic outlook on life. Each image reflects Kaela’s hope for the future, and if you look closely, you may see a few symbols and insightful titles that inspire you, too.

But don’t take it from us – the artist will tell you herself! Kaela, a Pablove Shutterbug from Dover, Ohio, and brain cancer survivor says: “The photos that I took, I captured a moment, and capturing moments of happiness is really important. So, if I’m having a rough time I can look at them and remember the experience.” Let’s take a closer look!

Art + Music = Love

December Artist of the Month: Isaac

This December, we’re showing some love for our home city of Los Angeles. With our Gallery Show coming up in just a few days, we’re showcasing one of our talented Los Angeles alums, Isaac. He lives in South LA, works in music, and has participated in both our 8-week mentorship program and our Alumni Summer Camp.

Isaac’s portfolio of photographs is a thoughtful and personal reflection that paints a picture of him as a talented photographer, musician, and creative thinker. It’s no doubt that these photos are easy on the eyes, but what’s truly impactful are the stories he has to tell about them. Let’s take a glimpse!

Happy Birthday, Model T!

Henry Ford, Model T, 1908
Henry Ford and Model T, circa 1908.

Over a hundred years ago, on October 1, 1908, the first Ford Model T car rolled off the assembly line in Detroit, Michigan. The Model T was the first car of it’s kind to make the automobile affordable and accessible to many Americans. This huge technological advancement paved the way (pun intended!) for the rise of car culture in the US. And so began our love affair- at 107 years young, we are still swept up by the magic of the automobile.

October Artist of the Month: Juliett

It’s no surprise that Juliett likes reading The Grimm’s Brother’s fairy tales- her photos have an eery, magical quality that’s part fantasy, part reality. Juliett’s images in this October collection are fittingly ghostly for the Halloween season (which just so happens to be her favorite holiday). Beware, they just may send a chill down your spine!

As you can see, her photographs are steeped with muted colors, feeling, and an air of mystery. Juliett is interested in creating images that mean something to her, and likes to use the black and white feature to create an older, more vintage feel. Scroll through the collection and you definitely get a sense of leaving this era and finding yourself in another.

Going Golden

The golden hour is the magic hour. Most photographers know this to be true, but what does that really mean?

Hyrun, 9 years old, Palo Alto

A quick Google search will tell you that during the golden hour, shadows are less dark, less harsh, and highlights are less likely to be overexposed. But the delightful subtleties of the golden hour are best explored in person during that hard-to-put-your-finger-on instant riiiight before the sun begins to set. And, if you’re a shutterbug, that’s the moment to snap your photo.

September Artist of the Month: Zachary

Zachary has a knack for taking sweeping, epic photos that are larger than life. Take for example, his interpretation of the Golden Gate Bridge, where he captures the iconic structure in a dreamlike state. He uses his camera as a tool to explore the world near and far (this summer, he took his camera with him across the pond to Germany).
