September Artist of the Month: Zachary

Zachary has a knack for taking sweeping, epic photos that are larger than life. Take for example, his interpretation of the Golden Gate Bridge, where he captures the iconic structure in a dreamlike state. He uses his camera as a tool to explore the world near and far (this summer, he took his camera with him across the pond to Germany).

In this collection, Zachary captures some otherworldly shots from a watery perspective – the San Francisco Bay! His favorite thing about taking photos is identifying lines, finding order, and making the world look different than it usually appears. His images have a moody aura. It’s easy to identify in his dark image of an abandoned pier, where the reflections on the water’s surface seem as smooth as glass.

Of his eerie shot of the Golden Gate bridge, Zachary reflects, “I took the photo because I’ve never been so close to the bridge and I knew I’d never get a view like that again.” The purple hue and ominous clouds set this image apart from the postcard-perfect Golden Gate Bridge we are so used to seeing.

When capturing the snapshot of noisy, boisterous pelicans, Zachary remembers, “I had to take a bunch of pictures before I got one that I really liked because they didn’t sit still. They were loud and made all sorts of funky movements. From time to time they’d swoop down and catch a fish.” Looks like the persistence paid off! Great snaps, Zach!

Zachary is 11 years old from Burlingame, CA, and is looking forward to the 7th grade. His next stop is to become a baseball player or an inventor– both pretty cool professions if you ask us.

  • I particularly love the Pelican shot! It was beautiful how you captured the perspective across the image – the birds in various stages of flight make it a textured delight. And the soft yellow hue of their fluffy heads juxtapose the rocky shore and grey sky and feathers is so simple and beautiful. Well done Zachary! Can I get a 4″ x 6″ copy of the image? I would like to be your first paying customer :)

  • Zachary,
You must know that since I’m a pilot my favorite picture is the one of the Golden Gate. On a day like that I would definitely choose to fly my chopper under rather than over the bridge. You are a gifted photographer so I hope you stay with it. You should ask your Dad about his old school photography training in the Shepaug darkroom for inspiration!
